Unique Methods

The basis of McCarter’s expertise with Silicon fabrication has been on-going since 1988.  In 1999, McCarter Machine Inc began a Silicon Validation Study , which is a proprietary study of SCSi, with emphasis on qualifying SCSi as a choice material for optics and optical components.  A detailed description on SCSi material properties that are relevant to optics can be found by clicking here.

McCarter Processing Methods for Single Crystal Silicon (SCSi)

During McCarter's internal R&D efforts, application processes have been developed and formulations selected specifically customized to the requirements of SCSi optics and optical substrates.

All but a few of the tests were performed on McCarter-processed SCSi samples by independent universities and laboratories so that we could quantify and qualify our patented and proprietary processing methods.  We now have data on how our processing methods affect SCSi properties in strength, dynamic response, cryostability, coating response, long-term stability, and rad hardness.

To support our continuting efforts, McCarter has added Roger Paquin to our staff.  A graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, Mr. Paquin is a Fellow of SPIE and IOES, as well as a member of ASM International.  Mr. Paquin is world renowned Materials Stabilization Scientist who has developed processes and procedures that enabled the manufacturing of Mirrors and Telescopes that are currently in use and production.  (see the Company link for access to Mr. Paquin's resume).   At McCarter, Mr. Paquin reviews our data, assesses its accuracy, and provided the technical merits of our effort to implement single crystal Silicon, in place of Beryllium.  He is also involved in the High Energy Laser SCSi Mirrors and High Performance Cooled SCSi Mirror Programs.paquin_roger

Frank Anthony Memorial Library
Housed on-site at the McCarter facility, the Frank Anthony Memorial Library contains information on research conducted as far back as 1951 on cooled and uncooled optics, and provided valuable support to our internal R& D.   Frank, McCarter Technology, Inc.'s Analytical Scientist and long-time SPIE member, passed away March 17, 2003 in his hometown Buffalo, NY.  His familiy donated his personal library to Doug McCarter, co-founder of McCarter Technology.

Frank Anthony, analytical scientist, began working with McCarter Machine, Inc. May 1998. His duties included, but were not limited to, the following: mechanical design review, thermal analysis, structural analysis, extensive data research, process plan development, and sales and marketing, both national and international.

He co-authored McCarter's Technology Inc.'s technical papers, presented to SPIE, "McCarter Superfinish Grinding for Silicon", "McCarter Superfinish Grinding for Silicon, An Update", "Cryostable Lightweight Frit Bonded Silicon Mirror" and "A Lightweight Frit Bonded Spherical Silicon Mirror Demonstrates Cryostability".

Frank had 46 years of thermal structural experience. He worked at Boeing for six years as a consultant, and Bell Aerospace Textron for 35 years as Program/Manager/Technical Director for Silicon laser mirror and developmental contracts.
